Are Two-Tone Designer Sunglasses the Look for You?

Two Tone SunglassesAs we’ve seen over the past couple of months, celebrities are taking a staid and classic approach to style: unisex Ray Ban sunglasses in wayfarer or clubmaster styles, satchel handbags, and purses in black or brown leather with few or no embellishments. But, at the same time, does that mean your wardrobe needs to be bland? Not at all. Even with basic designs, Ray Ban wayfarers and clubmasters offer a large array of color possibilities, and a two-tone look is one of these.

Teen actress Camille Belle was seen recently in a pair of two-tone cat eye Dior sunglasses. While her look could easily be attributed to simply being a teen, the two-tone Dior shades are truly the center of her outfit, which, even with a western-pattern vest, is composed of jeans and white, black, and brown tones. Against this, the transparent deep red and white shades jump out.

Dior has other two-tone options, especially for oversized styles. These Dior Diorissima sunglasses combine a mock tortoise look on a geometric frame, and, for a distinct contrast, white is added to the ends. Dior Diorissima sunglasses also come in red and black, all with blocks of white added.

The Dior Copacabana is more subtle. With a rounded frame, the sunglasses have metal ribbon-like embellishments at both ends.

Ray Ban, on the other hand, has a full line of two-tone unisex sunglasses. The Wayfarer II is a contemporary update of the classic style, one that intentionally adds contrast through patterns or color blocking. Many frames juxtapose a bright shade – white, red, or orange – with black, with one shade on top and one on the bottom. Others have a novelty appearance, with candy-like stripes going across the top.

If you think two-tone sunglasses would complement your look, how do you wear them? Two-tone sunglasses, regardless of brand, make a statement and, because of this, should be the primary draw of your outfit, not lost in a jumble of bright colors and patterns.

How to Wear Ray Ban Wayfarer and Clubmaster Sunglasses

Wayfarer and Clubmaster sunglassesWayfarer and clubmaster sunglasses are two of the “it” looks for summer 2011, and now as the weather is warming up, you are likely looking for a pair of shades for yourself. Although Ray Ban started both of these styles, other designer sunglasses brands have similar looks. Ray Ban, as the originator of these two styles, offers more variety, and if you want to go with more than a basic black pair, look through the brand’s many colorful looks.

If you are debating about purchasing wayfarer or clubmaster sunglasses for the summer, which one is best for you and how do you wear them?

Ray Ban’s Original Wayfarers go with nearly any face shape. Characterized but an angular-yet-rounded design, wayfarers have enough of a geometric look for round faces and enough curves for square visages.

Although you could call wayfarers the look that flatters everyone, the basic frame presents multiple style options. If you want a classic style – and that appears to be what the celebrities are doing – stick with the Original Wayfarers in black.

Sunglasses, particularly by designer brands, are both practical and a fashion statement. If your look tends to the latter, having two pairs of wayfarers is recommended. While the black goes with anything and everything, wayfarers come in a large array of colors: turquoise, pink, white, and red, to name a few. Ray Ban’s Wayfarer II offers even more possibilities with a two-tone look.

Clubmasters, originally introduced in the 1980s, can be considered a take on wayfarers but have some notable differences. Clubmaster sunglasses have a similar combination of rounded and angular lines, only with a half-rim style. Like wayfarers, clubmasters too come in a larger range of colors. The half-rim look, however, makes the introduction of color – be it turquoise, cobalt blue, or red – more subtle.

Celebrities Still Wearing Oversized Sunglasses

Celebrity Oversized Sunglasses

Don’t throw out your oversized sunglasses yet. But of course that depends on the style of oversized sunglasses you have. Seen on celebrities recently, oversized shades are still around but have gone through a few minor changes. If your oversized shades have a thick, pink frame and rhinestones, you should probably shelve them. If you went for a classic look with dark or gradient tones from the beginning, keep on wearing them.

As we have seen since the start of spring, celebrities are going for classic pieces, including sunglasses and handbags. Even though wayfarers and clubmasters are the “it” looks for summer, celebrities are still holding onto their oversized shades.

Carrie Ann Inaba, a Dancing with the Stars judge, was recently seen in a pair of brown and red-tinted Marc Jacobs sunglasses. Britney Spears sported a similar pair of Tom Ford sunglasses, and Amy Adams added a bit of color to her look with Prada sunglasses.

What’s different now? As you can see from the three styles worn by celebrities, basic goes with any outfit and does not always mean black. Instead, these three looks add a bit of dark red – but not too much – and have gradient lenses. Additionally, frames are thinner – but not just on these celebrity looks. If you take a look at any Marc Jacobs, Prada, or Tom Ford line, all oversized frames are noticeably thinner compared to styles from three years ago.

As far as your look is concerned, should you stay with oversized or completely ditch the look? That depends on your style and face shape. Although nearly every woman sported a pair five years ago, far more styles are in now. Large and rounded frames really only flatter angular or oval-shaped faces.

At the same time, don’t go for anything too tacky or bright. Sticking with neutral colors is a safe bet – and your sunglasses will always go with your look. But color isn’t bad for oversized frames, however. Add a little bit – but not too much – with a tinted frame or dark gradient lenses.

Getting Your Spring/Summer Wardrobe Prepared: Which Sunglasses and Handbags to Wear

2011 Spring Trends

Bright colors, clutches, nude shades, cross body bags, and classic clubmaster, aviator, and wayfarer sunglasses are in for spring 2011. Photos from Vision in Style and Handbag Distributor.

The snow has melted, and we’ve seen a few days above 40°F degrees. Spring, then, does not appear to be too far off. Even though you trudge outside in a thicker pea coat and boots now, soon blazers will be the jacket of choice.

What do you pair with your blazer, sleeves rolled up, skinny jeans, and flowy top? First, find a handbag that goes with your look and then find one or more pairs of sunglasses that complement it.

As we have seen so far, handbags are no longer large and shapeless, unless you’re carrying a tote. In fact, purses are tending more toward clutch sizes than the hobo look of last year. To have the right look, find a rectangular-shaped clutch with a strap or a crossbody bag and choose a neutral color. Black, of course, never fades out of style, but the latest neutral shade is nude: slightly pink, slightly peach, or a light brown.

On the other end, your handbag could be the centerpiece of your outfit, and designers like Christian Louboutin, Nina Ricci, and Louis Vuitton want you to think so. If you keep the clutch size and shape in mind, look for a color that pops out. The overall palette of colors for designer handbags now appears to be shifting back 20 years: hot pinks, bright reds, orange, and turquoise. As long as the rest of your outfit is staid, this type of handbag is appropriate.

Sunglasses, of course, are also necessary in the summer, and in addition to finding UV ray-blocking ones, look for the right style for your face: Rounded faces need to look for angular styles. Those with square shaped visages need to go with rounded frames.

Classic looks are back: the wayfarer, aviator, clubmaster, and cat eye styles. For both sexes, neutral – black frames and lenses – is never wrong, although you could add a dash of color. For men, silver lenses are in for all styles. Women, in the other hand, have a palette of colors similar to that of handbags to choose from. Add a touch of red, a hint of turquoise, or a sliver of gold with a pair of Ray-Ban wayfarers or clubmasters.

(Almost) Useless Celebrity Fashion Lines: Handbags by Katie Holmes, Sunglasses Inspired by January Jones

When does attaching a celebrity name to a brand go too far? Two lines influenced by B-list performers debuted recently: Holmes & Yang, a line designed partially be Katie Holmes, and Versace sunglasses inspired by January Jones.

Although Jones is presently part of a successful television show, the eyewear line is more inspired by her character, Betty Draper, than Jones’ personal style. However, basing a designer sunglasses line on Betty Draper is odd. Although the character, a former model turned housewife turned divorcee, has good taste in clothes, Betty Draper is Stepford Wife-like, openly expresses disgust for her daughter Sally, and has a list of other mental issues; essentially, she’s a passive-aggressive Mommy Dearest sans the star power. With Versace’s line, which seems to have wayfarers and cat eye styles, it appears that style significantly trumps substance.

On the topic of style versus substance, Katie Holmes recently debuted her handbag collection, a collaboration between the Dawson’s Creek actress and Jeanne Yang. Although made with high-quality materials from Valextra, the designs are boringly basic, at least from what can be found so far.

But, Holmes’ handbags are being sold at Barneys New York for about $4,000 a pop. Who does she think she is – Hermes?

When Dawson’s Creek is your most memorable contribution to the screen (although Holmes did a decent job in Thank You For Smoking), your star power is about as bright as a white dwarf. Holmes has stuck on the B-list because of her marriage and has turned into a moderate fashion icon, but who will really buy the bags? If she hadn’t married Tom Cruise, she would be in the same category as other faded teen stars. Would you buy clothing designed by Molly Ringwald or Julia Stiles?

Holmes’ handbag line is a conundrum. Who is her market? Should such basic handbags be sold for that high of a price? More importantly, if Katie Holmes was not attached to this line, would it have even seen the light of day, let alone get sold at Barneys?

Clubmaster Sunglasses are the It Look for Summer

Celebrity Clubmaster Sunglasses

Celebrities from Lindsay Lohan to Kristen Stewart have been spotted in clubmaster sunglasses, a style developed by Ray-Ban in the 1980s and re-launched in 2008. With a style combining rounded and angular lines, clubmaster sunglasses are similar to wayfarers but have a few notable differences. First, these designer sunglasses have a half-rim design: a horn rim top and nothing but rounded lens edges on the bottom. Wayfarers, on the other hand, are full-rim sunglasses and overall have a general angular look.

Much like wayfarers, as well, clubmaster sunglasses come in several different color combinations. Although a black-on-black look is classic, it’s not the only one out there. No matter if you wear the ‘80s style or a modern interpretation, you can add a hint of color with the half-rim frame.

So, who should be wearing clubmasters? Because the appearance is practically circular, those with rounded faces should probably go with wayfarers or cat eye shades instead. The balance between angular and rounded lines is not equal enough to be worn by everyone.

Instead, clubmasters are better for those with square or angular face shapes. The rounded lenses balance out the angles of square faces, and those with oval-shaped faces can pretty much wear any look.

What’s the best way for wearing clubmasters? As with any look, consider colors first. Basic black goes with just about anything, and the mirrored look – in for men this summer – is also versatile.

Like wayfarers, clubmaster sunglasses come in practically every color available. Want to add a touch or red or turquoise to your look but wayfarers and oversized sunglasses are too overpowering? Clubmasters have the right balance in this case. Take fashion cues from the celebrities: Kristen Stewart pairs her red-framed clubmasters with a matching skirt, and others, like Katy Perry and Natalie Portman, create a contrast between darker lenses and white or gold frames.

Sunglasses Trends for Summer 2011

If celebrities are the harbingers of upcoming trends for us average individuals, the recent shift toward classic sunglasses, especially for women, will be in full swing for summer. If you want to update your look for 2011, what does this mean for you? Instead of settling with those glittery rhinestone oversized sunglasses you’ve worn for the past two or three years, find a neutral pair of wayfarers, aviators, or cat eye sunglasses that can match with every outfit.

Much like we saw about a month ago, the bright and bold approach is out for eyewear. Although a slight hint of color – such as the red half-rims on Kristen Stewart’s Ray Ban Clubmaster shades – is acceptable, darker tones, such as black, gray, or brown gradient are bound to match more of your wardrobe. Unisex shades, such as wayfarer sunglasses or aviators, often stick with the black-on-black color combination, but if you want to add a more feminine touch to your look, think about the frame shape rather than its color.

In this case, cat eye sunglasses, which are similar to wayfarers in appearance but have an angled and sloped top half, and oversized shades in neutral colors are the best way to achieve this look. As oversized sunglasses, in particular, have turned into the staple style for women, being color-conscious can make or break your look. For this summer, stick with black or white and solid color or gradient lenses in brown or gray.

“Basic” more often applies to men’s eyewear than it does to women, but men’s sunglasses for 2011 are also classic. Rather than black frames and gradient lenses, however, the mirrored look – think Top Gun but less 1980s – is in. Mirrored aviators, in particular, will be the “it” pair for men, but many other styles have such lenses. Mirrored wayfarer and Clubmaster sunglasses can easily be found. If you go for this look in 2011, be careful handling the sunglasses; mirrored lenses scratch easily and, as the “mirror” effect is painted on, make imperfections more noticeable.

Celebrities Popularize Cat Eye Sunglasses

Cat eye sunglasses – not to be confused with wayfarers – have emerged as a popular eyewear style for women. Combining an angular and sloped top with a rounded bottom half, cat eye shades appear like wayfarers with a feminine touch. Somewhat of a vintage style, cat eye sunglasses are a fusion of ‘50s frames with ‘80s wayfarers and, much like the latter, are found in several colors and styles. Some designer sunglasses brands emphasize curves, and others go for a full-on angular look.

Celebrities can be seen wearing cat eye sunglasses, and because of the style’s quick rise, these shades will likely be an it-look for summer. Katy Perry sported a pair of bejeweled cat eye frames by A-morir before her wedding to Russell Brand, but here are some of the other stars wearing this look:

Dita Von Teese was seen wearing a pair of classic style cat eye frames recently. With a black frame and brown gradient lenses, such a style can go with any outfit, such as the fully black ensemble Von Teese is wearing or a more colorful look. Matching her vintage pinup look, these sunglasses emphasize curved lines, and even the top half has a softer touch.

Nicole Richie, who is now better known for fashion than her reality TV stint The Simple Life with Paris Hilton, was also seen recently in a similar look. While using the same black frame and brown gradient combination, these cat eye sunglasses are larger, thicker, and emphasize the top half of the frame.

The cat eye style sported by Scarlett Johansson favors an almond shape, which, unlike the style worn by Nicole Richie, does not cover half of her face. Johansson’s shades appear more ‘50s than ‘80s and, designed in a neutral style, can be paired with any modern or vintage look.

Celebrities Go For Classic Designer Sunglasses: Ray Ban, Persol, and Christian Dior

Designers seem to get women’s fashion all wrong, and sunglasses are no exception. With tall and thin models displaying the latest fashions, most high-end designer attire is bound to look off and odd on the average woman (even a celebrity), and accessories for many of these lines have been colored pink or another bright hue and covered in rhinestones, studs, or other embellishments. While a few studs here or there are still trendy, not everyone wants to look like a Jersey Shore cast member, and if A-list celebrities are the barometer of trends, eyewear is taking a back-to-basic approach.

Blake Lively, a star on the girliest of girly shows Gossip Girl, was seen recently in Ray Ban wayfarer sunglasses. But instead of going for a feminine look, such as pink or red frames, the actress seen this year in The Town chose a classic look: a black frame with black lenses. In the case of Lively’s moderately androgynous look in the picture – a fedora and what appears to be a sheepskin coat – the neutral sunglasses fit right in.

Kristen Stewart, who was apparently the highest-paid actress in 2010, was also spotted recently wearing a classic pair of Ray Ban Clubmaster sunglasses. A look that debuted in 1980s, Clubmaster sunglasses have a design concept similar to wayfarers: angular lines juxtaposed with curves. Clubmaster sunglasses essentially have a half-rim look, which makes them seem automatically more masculine and look like something Chris Lowe, the soft-spoken keyboardist for the Pet Shop Boys, would have worn in a late-‘80s music video.

On the A-list for teens, Miranda Cosgrove, the star of iCarly, is seen in Christian Dior oversized sunglasses. Instead of succumbing to a more age-appropriate look, Cosgrove appears to forego the sparkles and bright colors and settles on a classic pair of shades: a black, rounded frame and dark gradient lenses.

Although slightly older and maybe now a B-list celebrity, Ali Larter, best known for television show Heros, was seen recently in Persol aviator sunglasses. Women’s aviator sunglasses, over the past few years, have become more feminine: a pink or red plastic frame with light-colored gradient lenses. Persol, much like Ray Ban, goes for unisex looks, and stars like Larter have added these neutral frames to balance out their overall feminine appearance.

Lady Gaga’s Polaroid Sunglasses Debut at Consumer Electronics Tradeshow

Lady Gaga displays the GL 20 camera sunglasses she designed with Polaroid.

Revamping your brand, known for decades for instant photographs, begins with collaborating with the hottest pop star of the moment. While Polaroid and Lady Gaga started working together a year ago, only recently were their camera sunglasses revealed. Shown at the Consumer Electronics Tradeshow in Las Vegas, the sunglasses function as both a digital camera and, like ordinary designer sunglasses, protective eyewear. An Instant Mobile Printer and Instant Digital Camera (get the “instant” theme yet?) also made at appearance.

While fashionistas may pass up the printer and digital camera, these sunglasses are a curious item. Gaga and Polaroid have released them under the Grey Label Line as product GL20. Although the sunglasses have Gaga’s popular shield-frame look, a camera is embedded in the frame near the nose area, allowing the user to take pictures and videos. LCD screens are added over the eyes, and the user, then, views all pictures and videos instantly on the exterior of the shades. A USB port is added to the side of the frame, allowing the user to put any pictures or videos onto a computer.

A price for the camera sunglasses has not been listed, and the product is not expected to appear in stores until later this year.

Although the camera sunglasses are a confluence between fashion and technology, can Lady Gaga’s presence (she’s Polaroid’s Creative Director) revive the camera brand? Ever since digital cameras appeared nearly 10 years ago, the brand once known for instant pictures has been disappearing along with film and darkrooms. Why would consumers continue to use a product that produces a subpar image and does not hook up to a computer?

Polaroid cameras were convenient up until about 2002, and since then, they’ve become an item with the nostalgic value of cassettes and VCRs. Too cumbersome to carry around everywhere, Polaroid cameras were always a novelty item. While the GL20, too, seems like an expensive novelty product, it could be easier to take around and, maybe briefly, make the instant picture brand relevant again.
